FAQ for Applications and Admissions

These are common questions prospective students have about the materials science graduate program.

Where do I apply?

Through GradCAS on the Graduate College website.

When is the deadline?

Typically in mid-February for Fall semester applications.

I have many general questions. Can you answer them?

Most general questions have been answered by the Graduate College's Frequently Asked Questions.

What are the admission requirements?

Please see the Graduate College Requirements and our program's Admission and Program Requirements. The information can also be found in the Academic Catalog.

My GPA is below 3.00, can I still apply?

We strongly advise against applying if your GPA is below 3.00, as this will make you ineligible for an assistantship.

Is there funding available in the department?

Yes, there are Graduate Assistantships available beginning in the Fall semesters. A few assistantships may be offered in the Spring semesters depending upon availability. The number of assistantships is limited and the selection is competitive. Our Materials Science committee evaluate all applicants that meet the requirements and make recommendations to the Graduate College.

Am I eligible for a graduate assistantship as an international student?

Yes, you are eligible. Most of our students are international students.

Is there a GPA requirement for assistantship?

Yes, you must have a minimum of 3.00 GPA to be considered for an assistantship.

Will my chances for funding increase if I ask for it?

No, they will not. Your complete application will be evaluated together with all other applications by the department. The selection is made solely on academic merit.

Will I increase my chances for admission to the program by individually contacting and petitioning faculty in the department?

No, this will play no role in your admission to the program. Admission is made solely on academic merit.

Is the GRE required?

Yes, the general GRE is mandatory.

I am an international student. Is TOEFL or IELTS required for me?

Yes, unless you come from one of the approved exempt countries. Please see the English Proficiency Requirements.

When can I start my application?

The application portal is opened and coordinated by the Graduate College. The application portal for Fall semesters typically opens up in September, but keep monitoring the Graduate Applications at the Graduate College.

Am I eligible for the Materials Science program with my undergraduate degree?

That depends on your degree, the courses you have taken, and your grades. Please visit our Admission Requirements.

Do you have a PhD program?

No, we do not. We offer a Master of Science in Materials Science and a Master of Natural and Applied Science (MNAS) with emphases in Physics, Astronomy, or Materials Science. For the latter, please visit the MNAS page.

When can I expect to find out if I have been accepted to the program?

Notifications of acceptance to the program for Fall semester admission will be sent out in March of each year.

I have been admitted to the program. Can I defer my start to a later semester?

The Graduate College, in general, does not accept deferrals, however, under extreme circumstances, we may recommend a deferral, although this is rare. You are welcome to start a new application which will be considered among the new pool of applications. Your new application will not receive any special considerations.

How will I be assigned to a research supervisor in the department?

The assignment of research supervisors are made in the first semester once the students have begun their studies in the program.
