Scholarships and Financial Aid

The physics, astronomy and materials science department offers a number of scholarships specifically for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a degree in our department. These scholarships are designed to support your studies at Missouri State and reward excellence in both the community and the classroom.

You may also qualify for additional University-wide scholarships or financial aid. The office of financial aid provides information about University scholarships, grants and loans.

Engineering Program Scholarships

Selection criteria

There are currently no requirements for this scholarship other than being a student seeking a degree in either Electrical or Civil Engineering through the Cooperative Engineering Program

Renewal criteria

This scholarship cannot be renewed. 

John W. Northrip Memorial Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded to a full-time junior or senior majoring in Physics with an overall and departmental GPA of 3.0.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship cannot be renewed. 

Andereck Family Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded to undergraduate student majoring in Physics, Physics Education, Engineering Physics or Astronomy.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

Banks Family Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate majoring in the Department of Physics, Astronomy, and Materials Science. For incoming freshmen consideration will be given to high school academic performance and leadership.  For sophomores or greater student must have overall GPA of 3.0 and a departmental GPA of 3.0.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

Pre-engineering/Engineering Physics Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate majoring in an Engineering or Pre-Engineering field. Incoming freshmen considered based on high school academic performance and leadership. Sophomores or greater must have an overall GPA of 2.75 and a departmental GPA of 3.0. Preference given to students demonstrating hands-on engineering aptitude.

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

Kenneth A. Soxman Memorial Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a full-time junior majoring in Physics with a departmental GPA of 3.0.  Must demonstrate a desire to teach high school physics.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship cannot be renewed. 

Howard Petefish Award

Selection criteria

Awarded annually full-time student majoring in Physics.  Award given at end of student's junior year.  Must have overall GPA of 3.0 and a departmental GPA of 3.5.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship cannot be renewed. 

Physics and Astronomy Department and Friends Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to students seeking a degree in either Physics, Engineering Physics, Physics Education, or a minor in Astronomy.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship cannot be renewed.
